Watering instructions for trees & shrubs
Proper watering techniques are essential for maintaining the health and longevity of your trees and shrubs. At Milieu Landscaping, we believe that understanding your plants’ needs makes all the difference in creating a thriving landscape. This guide will help you determine when and how much to water your trees and shrubs, ensuring they flourish in any environment.
How Do I Know When To Water?
The simple answer is to water when Mother Nature hasn’t provided enough rain and when the ground appears dry. To accurately assess soil moisture, dig 3-4 inches into the ground. If the soil feels damp, there’s no need for additional watering. Remember, plants in our climate are accustomed to cycles of heavy rain followed by dry spells, which is why typical watering for most newly installed plants is about twice per week.
How Much Water Should I Apply?
When watering, focus on the root zone of your new plants—never water the foliage. Plants do not absorb moisture through their leaves, and wet foliage can lead to bacterial and fungal diseases. A heavy, thorough watering encourages strong root growth, allowing roots to penetrate deeper into the soil where moisture is available during dry spells. Aim for an amount comparable to about 1 inch of rainfall.
For most areas, hand watering with a garden hose works effectively. However, if you have extensive planting beds or long rows of hedges, consider using soaker hoses. These hoses slowly release water directly to the roots, minimizing runoff.
Overwatering?
Is it possible to overwater? Yes! Overwatering can be detrimental to your plants. Allowing the soil to dry out between waterings is crucial, as roots need oxygen to survive. Constantly wet soil can promote root rot and increase pest issues, which is why many new plants die from overwatering rather than drought.
In the first three months after installation, it is essential to water thoroughly twice per week. Afterward, you can reduce this to once weekly, ideally wrapping up by mid-November. Consistent watering days—like every Monday and Friday—make it easier to remember.
Keep in mind that smaller plants, particularly those with shallow root systems like hydrangeas and azaleas, may need more frequent watering. It’s preferable to water in the morning and ensure that only the soil receives moisture. Applying a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around your plants will help retain soil moisture, regulate temperatures, and suppress weeds.
Lastly, note that plants in full sun often require more frequent watering compared to those in shaded areas. During hot and windy conditions, increase your watering frequency to keep your landscape healthy and vibrant.
