Did you know that trees shed? Evergreens like the Arborvitae (Thuja species) go through a shedding process in spring and especially in fall. Needles will yellow during this natural process from the inside of the tree during this time. What to know when evaluating your trees:
🍂 Seasonal Needle Drop (Totally Normal!)
- Like many evergreens, arborvitae don’t keep all their needles forever.
- In spring & fall, the inner (older) needles—those closest to the trunk—will yellow and drop off.
- This helps the tree conserve energy and focus resources on newer growth.
⚠️ When Shedding Might Be a Problem
If you’re noticing browning or shedding on the tips or outer parts of the branches, it could be due to:
- Drought stress – arborvitae are thirsty, shallow-rooted trees.
- Overwatering or poor drainage – root rot can cause browning.
- Winter burn – drying winds in cold weather damage foliage.
- Insect damage – spider mites and bagworms are common culprits.
- Salt or chemical exposure – like road salt in winter.
🔍 How to Tell the Difference
- Normal shedding = yellowing inside the plant, not the ends.
- Problem shedding = browning or crispy needles at the tips, or patchy brown areas.
